So I got done with my first year of college and all the sudden I've got tons of free time. And I thought, "You know what, I haven't written anything in a long while. Let's go back to GW and see how the School of Battle's going."

Is it... doing... anything anymore? I see it's been close to a year since the last RP post. Does anyone even remember me?

Pretty good. I made it through the first year relatively unscathed. Majoring in Computer Engineering.

Yeah, I forgot I had a name change since I was last here. But then again, I haven't really posted here consistently for like 4 or 5 years. I tried a comeback a few times but it never really caught on and I got lazy with my posting again. I don't really suppose there's really enough people here to start a new thread, huh?

Occasionally people drop in. You're not going to get 10 people responding in 24 hours, but the story might progress if you're willing to play the long game. :D

Well if we're playing the long game I'll take a bit of time and come up with a good story and we'll see how it goes.

Well I've still got that idea swirling around in my brain. Whenever I actually figure out what direction to take it, I'll make a thread and we'll see if we can get some activity back in here.

Well, The Unwanted is gone, so hopefully somebody else fancies running this place. It doesn't require much at all. Just start a new thread every once in a while, I guess. There hasn't been an active RP in nearly a year, so ANYTHING is an improvement! :D

I figured we'd move the OOC convo here instead of in the reopening thread, so our posts don't get all cluttered.

On the topic of the character thread, I went back and read over the previous character threads to sort of remind myself what purpose they served. It was mostly a check for two things. To see if your character was completely overpowered, and to see if you could write well enough. The first check is completely reasonable, in my opinion. The second, I don't know so much. I think it would be okay to let people in that don't really have any RP skills. I mean, how else are they going to learn?

So, I think that we should have the character thread, and have people post in it so we can check and make sure that their character's aren't way too powerful (eg. "I have a huge sword and when I swing it everything around me is set on fire and also I can transform into a huge dragon because I'm part dragon and also I'm part rock so I'm really tough.") Some characters are powerful, yes, I'm RPing Matsuo that way in the new thread. But Matsuo and Jordan have been at this school for a while, even not counting my many absences. At the beginnng, Jordan could swing his sword and that was about it. And Matsuo was a ninja, but a pretty weak one. They worked to get where they are, I'd say they're some of the more powerful students now, but they didn't start that way. Dane, my third character, was at the school for a bit, but not much before I left. So I'm putting him as sort of a sophomore. Not new to the school, he's learned a bit, but definitely not as strong as Matsuo or Jordan.

So that's pretty much why I think the character thread and an approval process would be good. Not to test the person's writing ability, but to make sure they start their characters off realistically and have somewhere to progress. It is a school, ffs. You go there to learn and get better.

Maybe streamline the process so that people don't get discouraged about having to fill out a form. Make them post, but don't require it to be in depth or anything, just get the basics out there so people who you are RPing with have a place to reference your character and you've shown that you at least put some thought into it. Then let them start in a thread right away. We can have an approval process, but don't make it necessary before they start writing, that way they aren't waiting on someone. If there's a problem with their character, they can go back and fix it, and hopefully not too much time has passed between them posting and someone approving that they need to go back and rewrite anything in an actual thread.

And even if they do seem really overpowered in their first post, most people would probably call them out on it, you know? In like an OOC, say something like "Hey, your guy is probably a bit too strong for a new student. You might want to tone him down a bit."

Yeah, I appreciate that. I'm not even sure that characters necessarily need approval, to be honest. I think it could literally be a case of, as you say, just having a word with them if something is a bit over the top.

I think we'll just have to see once we get some new people in here (hopefully). The veterans of course know where to start their characters at, it's not really an issue for them.

I always considered the character profiles as a reference to be used by other people when interacting with your characters more than anything else, which is why i think they should still be used even if there's no approval process, its helpful and interesting, so yeah i totally agree with corax's 'streamline the process' paragraph

Personally I would've just edited the first post of the character list thread with the profile format and the 'don't be overpowered, you don't have to post a profile but you should' etc info and used that for character profiles, though I guess I just view the character biographies thread as the approval process rather than a resource to use to get info on characters.

Then again I dunno why I'm worried about it at all because I don't think we'll be getting new people.
(unless you guys have some friends who like to role play and might be interested in trying post-by-post)
I mean (as far as i know) the school of battle isn't exactly advertised on the internet or anything, if we do get anyone new it'll probably be from personal invite from one of the few people who knows it's been revived.

Tried to get a couple of my friends who like role playing games on board but they weren't interested :(

Goodness me it's been a while since I came here. I'm rather surprised it's still alive, but good to see. I used to spend so many hours in this place, if it was deleted, it'd be like losing a part of my teen years.

Nothing gets deleted anymore. An OOC post every few months is enough for this to be considered a relatively active forum. :D

I had a random desire to see if the ol' girl was breathing. New surroundings to be sure.

Holy crap this place is still here. Well. Kinda. I think School of Battle still had its own subforum last time I was here. And this new setting is a tad disorienting.

Anyway I decided to pop in to see how things were rolling and well...I think tectonic plates move faster.

Edit: Ah. Turns out I was last here two years ago. Just not in the SoB sub. I was over in the role play sub.

Yeah. We cut down on a lot of the forums - there were just too many. Unfortunately, SoB didn't have enough activity to justify staying as its own forum.

    Good to see you again!

Hey there, good to see someone still wants in. I grew up here - all my characters must be in their mid to late twenties by now, I nearly am and they're all older than me. I think though, friend, this one is maybe a lost cause. Glad i snatched all my work off here when i had the chance, prior to the extinction of the SoB forum and vBulletin apparently. Salud.
