Important -- If you haven't already, please read this important announcement regarding the future of GameWinners.com: http://gamewinners.com/index.php?threads/gamewinners-com-changes.81481/

    Hi All,

In the days following the announcement that the GameWinners.com founder and operator is retiring and, as a result, has removed the main site's cheat database, we have received a number of questions and comments regarding the cheats database and indicating a desire to have those cheats returned.

After discussing and deliberating, we have decided that the cheats will be added to our Resource Manager to keep as an archive; however, and this cannot be stressed enough, the cheats database is massive and it will not be an overnight process to bring those cheats into our Resource system. As a result of this, I am asking for help in deciding what systems we add to the database first, as in what systems need to be added first to ensure we're giving everyone the codes they need up front and adding the rest in over time.

So please, if you wouldn't mind, respond to this topic letting me know which consoles we need to add first, and we will work to add those as soon as is humanly possible.

    Thanks for your time!

    It's a hard one.

On the one hand: older cheats are probably a bit harder to find on other websites.

But on the other hand: people are, probably, more likely to be looking for newer ones.

I'd personally suggest older ones, GameWinners had a niche, might as well keep it.

That's what I was thinking would be a good starting place, too, perhaps work on the NES, SNES, Genesis and N64 systems first, as those tended to be the most trafficked forums in the past and what I would assume would be the most requested cheats. Then build around those systems working towards the newer ones.

I agree with your current plan. Systems that used game genie first, then get more modern

It does seem to be the most appropriate move at the moment. Waiting on feedback from Al, he's also looking for ways to convert files from static HTML to BBCode without needing to manually edit each and every game's file.

I'm going to post this as a status update every time I log in and see that it's fallen out of the most recent ones:

Also I agree with the plan on the order, but we need to also make sure to point people to the right direction...maybe make the "Resources" link mention something about being for cheats, or even rename it to "Resources & Cheats"

Yep, I plan to rename it to simply "Cheats" once we reach that point. Don't want to mislead people thinking they're there already ;).

There's no reason to keep any new game pages unless they actually have cheat codes, not "tips and tricks". Like GTA 5 has cheat codes that remove your star rating or give you a bunch of money.

You could probably weed out hundreds of games that don't belong in the database anymore.

Unfortunately, because the database is no longer available, I can't supply an example, but I know there were tons of games that only had "tips and tricks". Almost makes me wish Al gave us a heads up in advance.

    Good idea...

This website is slow as fuck.

Here's an example of a game with NO cheat codes:
    https://web.archive.org/web/2015101...php/Assassin's_Creed_4:_Black_Flag_(Xbox_One)

Notice how the game says "Cheats" but you only get them when you unlock them. The rest of it are unlocks. I don't think this kind of stuff needs to be in the resource manager.

Here is another good example of a page we don't need anymore:
    https://web.archive.org/web/20160808050013/http://www.gamewinners.com/Cheats/index.php/Halo_3:_ODST

It's just unlockables... and not even good ones at that.

Hey everyone. First of all, I'm glad that people still want the old content, and want to keep it around. Just to assure everyone, every byte of information up to the moment that the main site went dark is still around and can be preserved. Some thoughts...

Indeed. Besides individual pages for each game, there were also separate pages for Game Genie/Game Shark codes, etc. We are looking at an estimated 60,000 to 90,000 pages. Hopefully the Resource Manager can scale to handle a significant amount of content.

Besides "low calorie" pages, there are a lot of "seed" pages that basically had a request for more info followed by a link to a review page, GameFAQs guide, or YouTube video. They were meant as a starting place for people to add more info. Pretty much done to solve the chicken and the egg problem. There would be no place for people to submit more info without a skeleton first. Those of course can now be skipped.

Towards the end, many pages were simply Microsoft achievement, PlayStation trophy, or Steam achievement lists. Once again, pretty much a placeholder, primarily for YouTube links to demonstrate how to unlock that particular item.

The idea of keeping just the meaty pages is a good idea. For long time visitors, you will be able to see how much useful content has dropped from the cartridge and early disc era to the current generation. It then becomes clear why cheat code and walkthrough sites are bound for extinction.
    • Real cheat codes (UDUDLLRRBA type) aren't put in games. The emphasis on skill and not cheats/exploits is evident with the transition to MMOs, eSports, online gaming (LoL, Overwatch, CoD, Battlefield, etc.), and even mobile games. No one watches a Twitch stream to watch someone cheat -- it's to be entertained with their commentary and skill.
    • Bonuses that were once unlocked through codes (skins, extra modes, bonus areas) are now more profitable as DLC or microtransactions to publishers.
    • If a picture is worth 1,000 words and a video is worth 1,000 pictures, then a video is worth 1 million words. There's no incentive for anyone to write a text walkthrough or guide, when you can create a YouTube video that does the same thing and monetize it.
Just some thoughts as to how things got to this point. Thanks all!

When you get this back up will you be adding new games when they come out still? And until then what is another good site to use? This site was a great source for hints and tips for games.

Given the focus on Unlockables and DLC versus actual cheats and things of that nature in newer games, it seems unlikely we'll be focusing on those types of games in terms of the resources section; however, we do still have these forums that can be used just as easily to ask questions and get help with games ;).

we should have a resource named something like "if you don't see your game listed, click here" and then explain why some of the newer games are not listed

also, after this massive undertaking is complete, we need to make the location of the codes prominent for people coming only for them to find

Yeah, there'll be a notice on the index, and I'm assuming we'll be changing the navigation a little bit to emphasize the cheats section. May even redesign the forums completely at this point.

I've uploaded a test entry in the Resource Manager showing an example of a typical converted page. It can be viewed at http://gamewinners.com/index.php?resources/test-cheat-entry.14/

Typically someone would remove the extra line feeds, etc. before posting it to clean it up, but you can get the idea of how the content will appear.

Looks good to me! I'm glad the old data will be preserved in this fashion as I have an ever expanding library of older games that I'm sure have cheat codes a normal person couldn't just figure out. I'm sure adding all of those old pages is going to be a huge undertaking, bless you guys.

I've altered the name of the Resource tab to reflect the fact that this is where cheats are being stored moving forward; however, I've also added a notice to the top of the resources page that explains that this is a work in progress and not everything has been added back just yet. We are working as quickly as we can to get the games up, it's just one of those things that takes time.

Hopefully this helps in easing some of the concerns about the cheats going away and shows that we are indeed working on restoring them.

do we need steam to be up there between home and cheats? can we make it a subheading under the members tab? the current placement makes it seem more prominent than cheats

regarding the actual cheats tab, can you rename it cheats/codes? while not important, it is more reminiscent of the "Cheats and Codes" that Al had named the section previously (https://web.archive.org/web/20151106164031/http://www.gamewinners.com/)

Also, will it be possible to organize that section into folders/forums or add a search feature? currently it looks like it will be the equivalent of a forum with almost 25,000 threads to search through

Sorry, on my phone atm, so will flesh this out later...

Yep, will move Steam and rename cheats. Also if you check the sidebar you'll see categories to narrow the results down considerably.

Whoops, that's a simple permissions error, I'll fix that ASAP

Following up on this -- I've renamed the Cheats tab, but it appears I'm presently unable to move the Steam tab. I'll look into removing it completely in the near future.

Everyone should now be able to see the resources properly without any issues. If there are still issues viewing resources, please let me know!

It looks better as "Cheats & Codes." The longer length makes it stand out better too. The only way to increase visibility after that, if necessary, would be to increase font size or make the dark beige a little darker.

For the drop-down menu/quick links for C&C, would it be better to replace most active authors and latest reviews with the actual categories or a link to the categories themselves?

as my CT says, I'm only an idea man, not an action guy
