The beta is open now until the 9th for everybody on PC, X1 and PS4.

I recommend that you try it. I've been having an absolute blast with it.

Don't know how customized the characters are going to be.

There are no hats, but there is some level of customisation. There's about 50 items for each hero including visual skins, different voice lines and different actions.

I love it. I swallowed my pride and actually pre-ordered something else. So I've been playing it since the 3rd. So much fun.

I haven't had a chance to play if. Got a bunch of other stuff going on. Might squeeze in some time on the 9th.

I haven't played much, but I've played enough to know that you need friends to play this. Playing with randoms sucks. First match I played, my team started out on defense. The opposing team rolled that train through us in under 2 minutes because there was no one trying to play defense. Each time I respawned, I'd find myself the only one trying to stop the opposing team from advancing and I have no idea what I'm doing. Offensive was a little better, but still lost.

I can see this being a shitton of fun, but only if you're playing with people you know, otherwise it's going to be a crapshoot. One player cannot dominate a match, every character is so different and has a weakness that prevents them from carrying an entire team. It really is TF2 with many more characters.

Too many short range characters, though, not enough mid-range attack options.

Played a bit more. Realized I you can customize controls for each character.

Pharah is really easy to just pick up and play. Mercy is too, though you have to go in knowing you're not going to be doing any offensive work at all. I'm disappointed that the guy with the sword doesn't get to use it all that much. I would have liked to be able to use it as a primary form of attack.

Everything seems to be really well balanced. No glaring issues, no obvious "play this character or you'll get your butt kicked" characters. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses.

Example: Mercy is a healing character, she's got a damage boost ability too, but I felt healing was more useful. While your healing (or boosting), you can't attack... at all... not that you'd want to, her gun is like a peashooter only to be used in self defense when your not near anyone... which, if that's the case, shame on you.
Lucio is another healing character. He heals more slowly unless you use the "Pump it up" ability which temporarily boosts your healing ability. The reason your healing is slower is because it's always on. Whenever you're near a teammate, they're always getting health assist. Because it's always on, you can use your weapon too, which is strong enough to keep you alive while you're keeping someone else alive, but not overly powerful. His gun has two fire modes: a three "round" burst and a close range "get off me" blast that has a reload timer. He can also aid in the speed of teammates, say if you want to get to an objective faster, but you can't heal them while so.

I hope there aren't any issues in regards to hacks and scripts down the line, because I could see this game having really long legs, especially since future DLC modes and characters will be free, which will mean no one is left in the dark.

I might actually get this game. I feel like I could actually be good at this game. The lack of server instability and lack coupled with the low system requirements and the really smooth and balanced gameplay means I could end up playing this... a lot. Might be worth whatever it'll cost to get this.

If I do get this, I need to know if I'll be able to play with someone else here on PC. I don't know anyone who will end up playing this, and I really don't want to spend all my time playing this with randoms who don't know what they're doing. It took me one match to realize that if the players on your team don't do what they're supposed to do and don't PTFO, it's going to be a quick match with you on the losing end wondering where the fuck your support was.

I played in one closed beta and a stress test before and I can tell you they've balanced out the characters quite a bit since then. Bastion, that robot that turns itself into a bullet spewing sentry gun used to have a shield on him that would recover before hitting your actual HP. That was nuts and the cheese and salt was so bad. Now he lacks the shield, but can still destroy anyone who is silly enough to walk straight into him. That's probably the most glaring big balance change.

The best thing about the game, kind of like TF2 as well, is that you can switch your hero at any point. The team comp is always in fluid motion if there's some other hero that has a free reign to destroy your team you can just pick something else that can kill that one easier. Same thing works the other way around too if you get out of control. You'll see the other team adapt to you too.

You can easily notice the people who've played the game in previous betas from the newbies. The strats and tactics of each hero and the ways they can destroy you only become apparent as you play them and do it yourself. Unless you're Reaper and jump into a crowd and click Q. Even then, Reaper can do some silly flanking shit with the teleport ability. If you don't know the maps well you can't do that.

I just wish there'd be more actually silly and funny things you can do. Maybe TF2 spoiled me in that sense. I'd love to go around during skirmish and just mess around doing emotes and voice clips and push people off the maps and jump after them. Stuff like that is what I like.

Good news for players like me who just got started on the game. Blizzard extended the beta an extra day. 10AM PST on the 10th.

I read some things were done to nerf McCree.

Edit: I don't know why I always have a hard time hitting stuff that is flying in the air. Can't hit other Pharahs to save my life... especially if there are two of them, something I just encountered. This isn't the only game I have this issue. I suck at anything that requires aiming at stuff that is flying around.

    Yup, definitely a Blizzard game.

I downloaded the beta. But did not get to play it at all. I'd been playing MGSV as my primary game recently, and I've not played that in a week. Too busy. Oh well. I hesitate on Blizzard games because the last time I played one I was hooked for 10 years........

I'd be okay with getting hooked on a FPS if it meant I was getting good at it.

There's a reason new FPS games come out yearly (Battlefield, CoD). They don't precisely have long shelf lives.

The Quake, Unreal Tournament, Fallout, Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike, and Planetside communities would disagree with you.

You can't use Battlefield and CoD as examples and completely ignore the fact that you're talking about games from Activision and EA.

Should have specified I meant online FPS games. As in the multiplayer aspect of the FPS. Because isn't Overwatch like that?

All of what I listed sans Fallout are multiplayer FPS games... and popular ones at that.

Do you honestly believe the hype and playability of any of those games outside FO sustains the level of interest after say... about 6 months? The gunplay gets stale quickly in online FPS games. Maps only do so much before the game dies off. You can't honestly compare the levels of dedication in online FPS to that of something like World of Warcraft. Which is essentially what I was doing.

*EDIT* That's not to say people stop playing altogether. But if you see 50,000 online the first month, that number steadily drops over the next 5-6 months, in my experience. Yes, there will always be the hardcore and diehards. But after a short time, that 50,000 becomes 10,000 in fairly short order. That's all I meant.

I played Hat Fortress Deuce for years.

Depending on what happens with Overwatch, I'll be playing that for years to come for sure.

I tried playing TF2 for the first time in a long time today... sure are a lot of Spies running around. Guess no one likes playing the medic... even though EVERYONE cries for one. It's all over the chat. MEDIC! MEDIC! MEDIC! MEDIC! God, play the objective and maybe I'll heal you. Uber charges WAY too slowly for my taste. In Overwatch, I felt like me playing as Mercy was having an actual impact... I didn't feel that way playing Medic in TF2... maybe it's that characters die so quickly and the matches allow for a larger amount of players, IDK.

Also, who thought it was a good idea to allow Spies to be able to kill Heavies in one hit? Where does that make sense?

After having played TF2 for an hour or so, I'm liking what Overwatch has to offer more and more. The fact that it's going to be 40 bucks AND the DLC is free means this could be the first multiplayer game I really, really sink my teeth into since Halo 3. Every other FPS multiplayer has only lasted for a couple months for me before I got sick and tired of its shit.

On the player knowledge issue, I guess it's just a matter of time. Most people had not played the game before and like me were probably trying out all of the heroes even when they were not the most suitable for the team's overall composition, and obviously map knowledge was mostly non-existent. By the time of my last game today I think it had improved somewhat and guys like Bastion were generally getting shut down pretty quickly compared to day 1.

But yeah, I enjoyed this a lot. Will probably order the full game before launch. My favourites turned out to be Hanzo, Widowmaker and Pharah. I really got into Widowmaker because she's so versatile and all around powerful, Hanzo's split arrows are awesome and Pharah's ultimate is ridiculous if the team are distracted or don't manage to lock on to you in time.

This is a large selling point (to me anyway).

This makes it different, as this is an MMO feature not many FPS have. This is what may keep it relevant. Giving classes and tanks, healers, dps rolls? That's not exactly classic shooter style FPS. That being said, I never played any of the other games (other than Fallout) that you listed. If they had this element, too, then my statement is indeed incorrect. This style of play is certainly different than your CoD and BF shooters, which are the kinds I meant fall off after a few months.

If this isn't enough to prove how awesome the game is, I don't know what will.

Based on future videos on the guys channel, you can still do this, which means Blizzard might be okay with this, or designed it to be like that. Kobe shot FTW.

So, according to Blizzard's release schedule, people who live on the American west coast will be able to play as early as 4PM on Monday. They're releasing it at midnight GMT on Tuesday the 24th, and instead releasing the game at midnight for every timezone, they're releasing the game for everyone at the same exact time. So for me, I get to play it at 7PM on Monday. Here's hoping their servers are ready.

    https://playoverwatch.com/en-us/blog/20119623?login

I think that means Hawaii gets the game at 2PM on the 23rd. A couple little islands in the Pacific could theoretically play it at 1PM, but I doubt Jarvis Island or Midway has much of a network infrastructure.

Blizzard should be. They had what? 12 million subscribers to WoW at one point? I find it unlikely they'll break that early into overwatch. While I wouldn't mind trying it, I feel like this is one of those games that's going to be hard to get into late. Blizzard isn't exactly known for its fair and logical matchmaking systems.

Them being able to keep WoW working didn't help keep them from having issues with the Diablo 3 release.

Touché. This is a tad different though. I don't recall D3 being solely MMO, but correct me if I am wrong. Not that that is an excuse. There should be stability for all servers. But for a company that's had its hand in on the most successful MMO of all time, you would assume they should be able to handle the influx. That said, sometimes it's just the hardware that can't handle things, no matter the preparation. I will not be playing this at all at first (no time or free money at this point), but I encourage people to fill me in on how the first week goes, roundabouts. I'm intrigued by the game.

No, Diablo 3 wasn't an MMO, but it originally did require players being connected to a server just to play the single player.

I'll find out at 7 when the game goes live.
