Truly the end of an era, and, perhaps, the start of new.

Thanks for all the fish, Al! Without GameWinners, I certainly wouldn't have beat as many games as I did and made enemies with Coleman.

All the best in your future endeavors.

Its not too late, the forums will still be here.

Somehow after all these years a Gamewinners email made it straight to my spam folder and of all the emails it was this one. I havent logged into the main site in quite a while as I didnt use cheat codes very much anymore but now that its gone its a little sad knowing that its not there anymore (but its good the forums are staying around). The first game I looked up cheatcodes for was Star Wars: Rogue Squadron for the N64. It baffled me how they were able to put the Naboo Star fighter in there before the movie came out.
I remember when I first came to this site. I found out about it through my still best friend in real life @bladeoftheimmortal or @deathscyth or @AFreak2005. (he was banned a few times). We would argue non-stop in console combat with him being in the PlayStation camp and I in the Nintendo camp and for the first couple years I didnt post anywhere else, but one day after having an account banned I decided to make another one and try to be 'nice' to people, thats when I found all the other forums and all the other things you could talk about. I've been here ever since.
This website has helped with more than cheat codes, these forums have helped me through hard times when I would move to a new place and not know anyone. It kept me feeling connected in some way so before I get too mushy I just want to thanks for these forums and this website. Its thoroughly ingrained in all our lives and we are all grateful for it. Have fun in retirement.

They had money... but Ben took all the premium membership money when he left.

It's not a monetary issue, so much as simply being time to move forward. Al's been doing this for 21 years, and while game help and discussion still has a place in modern gaming, cheat codes have become increasingly absent. As a retro game collector, I still used the main site from time to time for codes for older games, but for others who only play the latest and greatest, the website was starting to become almost meaningless to them. It makes sense, to some degree, to move beyond the site and give the community a chance to flourish once again.

On the upside, we are looking at ways of adding the cheat codes in an archived form to the resource manager so that they can be preserved.

Not entirely accurate. The Premium Membership program was something started on the understanding that Al did not want to profit from it, he wanted Ben and Brig to use it as a means to get something back from GameWinners for their dedication and services to the site. It also wasn't exactly a huge money generator, as Premium Memberships quickly moved from a 'must have' at launch, to a 'meh, not really worth it' within a pretty quick span. Since I replaced Ben, we saw very few Premium Memberships, and the money that was received for those was placed immediately back into the site through Steam giveaways and such, and you can tell by how many of those we had just how successful the Premium Membership idea was ;).

Ad revenue has been, and likely will always be, the primary revenue generator for GameWinners.

I just saw the email about the site changes, thought I drop in for a bit. To me GW is a sort of microcosm for the lifespan of an website/internet community, I wasn't here when it started and I haven't been active for several years now, but I still experiencing nostalgia coming back to this site in all its #F5F6E5 glory.

Thanks, Al, for all you have done in creating and maintaining the site over the years.

It's crazy that I have been registered here for about half my life. I was just a freshman in high school looking for help on the last level of The World is Not Enough on N64, a game that I had rented and was trying to beat before I had to return it. And now almost 16 years later I have so many memories stemming from these forums.

I have made multiple friends, people I could see myself hanging out with in real life. @The Eye in the Sky! is like my twin, only taller. I have even met a few people from here in person and enjoyed those experiences.

I remember the issue people had was that the old Ben-era premium page said explicitly that the money was going into the site and not Ben and Brig.

Yeah, I do remember that somewhat, and I believe the original intention was to do something like what Coleman and I tried to do with the Steam giveaways and whatnot, but I can also understand Ben wanting to get something out of the site he put so much effort into.

Really it just wasn't enough money for me to care that much about it going with him.

Agreed, it wasn't exactly pulling in the proverbial Benjamins...

Aw man! I just randomly decided to revisit GW today, after... years? While I'm sad the old site is "gone", I'm glad it can be archived. GW was a safe place for me to nerd out with like-minded gamers and have a respite from my less-than-ideal school social life. GW was seriously one of the few things that kept me sane a decade ago. Thank you for having put together such a great community and collecting the best codes! Congrats on keeping it alive so long, long live the community! :D
(Also this is my post #1337)!

I just joined today (last night really), looking for files for Return to Krondor (and any of the Krondor series). This seems to be the last repository of files for games of that age. Like most said, keeping the files for older games that people play for nostalgia seems like the best corse of action. Let the dozens of other sites take care of the newer games.

Man, we should have shut down the main site forever ago. Got people to start posting here... even if it's just to ask for cheats and game help... which is what got most of us to join in the first place.

I have been a long time user of Gamewinners for over 16 years now. but like with most sites I never made an account on here before. I was just a silent loyal fan of this site even when I only had Dial up and had to ask my parents for permission to go online. but today I went to look up cheat codes for Shadow Warrior (1997) and I read that the site has been shut down... its like a little piece of me died. Gamewinners has been part of my life from since even Before I had internet. This was and has always been my number one go-to place to get cheats codes and hints for all of my video games. it makes me very sad to see that its gone.

I give a huge Thank you to Al for creating the website that has given me countless hours of fun playing games, helping me pass the levels that were too challenging for me with the "level skip" cheats. and plow though enemies with the God mode cheats. This site made my years growing up that much more fun.

Thanks for joining, and apologies for not having the game you're looking for readily available just yet!

If it helps, there is a cached version of the page from the old site available here: https://web.archive.org/web/2015052...ners.com/Cheats/index.php/Shadow_Warrior_(PC)

Everything ends eventually, except myself until proven otherwise. Unfortunate as the end to the main site is. It has proven how much and how many lives you made better from your site, myself included. I wish you the best with the rest of your life and any projects you do in the future. Thank you for the site and the large part it played in my life. I may have stopped posting but I always kept visiting.
