Usually we just have our Premier League thread but I thought this year to be a bit more inclusive I would start a thread for discussion of all the other leagues in England and around the world.

This is also a place where Apollo can unashamedly discuss Bolton as they have now dropped from the Prem and Andy can discuss Cheltenham who play in nPower League 2 if you didn't know.

    Cheltenham's Fixture

    Bolton's Fixture

Also I'm sure we can use this as a place to discuss Messi's continued dominance of the Spanish League, the excitement that is watching Dortmund's found kids and I might even mention the a-League once or twice.

    Well in that case...

    < DON'T INGORE THIS IT'S A BOLTON POST >

Not a whole lot happening on the Bolton front, except they've managed to give up on signing Leicester City central defender Matt Mills, only to come back a day or two later and say they've signed him (or will be signing him within the next day or so...) on loan for the season, with the option to buy him at the end of the year. It's a good move to add some depth there, since we've only got Tim Ream and the newly re-joined Zat Knight (ugh, couldn't someone have made an offer?). David Wheater's not going to be available for some time, given his knee injury, so good move even if he turns out to be a dud.

Also, in keeping with true Bolton "let's not creep out from the Big Sam era and be unique" fashion, Bolton have decided to sign cartilage-hunter Keith Andrews. Will be great to hear all the fans complaining that Bolton are still nothing more than a heavy-handed group of thugs who only know how to break legs (irony!) and how they've got a captain who could be a prime example of that...can't wait!

    Otherwise...yay...new season...lots of winning, hopefully...

Keith Andrews had a great season with Ipswich. Good signing for the Championship. Likewise, Matt Mills is a very good centre back at that level, even if it didn't quite work out at Leicester. He was great at Reading.

I believe Matt Mills will be a good fit, he's fairly young and looking over what I could find on YouTube shows he could be a solid player (and with a valuation of only ?2 million, if he does prove to be solid, Bolton could easily afford him at the end of this loan spell). I don't have much faith in Keith Andrews panning out, given the reputation that's following him around. Granted, we had Danny Guthrie before he decided to become Joey Barton Jr, so there's a chance he might be a reform project...

Also, of no genuine relevance to the upcoming season, but still fantastically awesome enough to warrant mentioning as many times as possible: Fabrice Muamba is being given an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bolton. Related mostly to articles that came out around the time of his heart attack in which he previously stated that his ambition following his football career was to earn a doctorate and be known as "Dr. Muamba" by friends and family. Looks like he gets that wish ;).

That's a nice story. Good stuff indeed. Nice one, Doc.

Mills would have been a perfect signing during the Allardyce era.

Aye, West Ham missed out on that one!

Since we're generally talking about the Championship at the moment, very interesting signing by Brighton in getting Tomasz Kuszczak. I remember him being decent at United, but not much of a stand-out (granted, he didn't have much of a chance there), so it'll be interesting to see how that plays out.

Tomasz was always a decent keeper in my mind probably a little unlucky to have been there while van der Sar was or he would have played a lot more. Also it's good to hear about some good things happening for Muamba.

He spent time on loan at Watford last season. I thought he'd have been a good signing for QPR, as Paddy Kenny is terrible. Looks as if they have got Rob Green, though.

    He isn't much better really.

Dortmund signed Marco Reus so that is yet another young gun in that line up. If they can hold onto this team they could become a really dominate force as it will only encourage other players to go there.

I still feel for Rob Green, the way he was sort of pushed out the door at West Ham. I understand Bolton Jr. signing Jussi somewhat forced him to move elsewhere, but it still seems a bit harsh. Good pickup for QPR, though.

That aside, how are things shaping up for Cheltenham? I'm trying to keep up with League 1 and League 2 a bit more lately, but I'm mostly following AFC Wimbledon, just for that inevitable day when they one day get to face MK Dons (will be epic!), and Shrewsbury, whom I've inexplicably been somewhat following since 06...

Not much has really happened this summer. We released a few players and Luke Summerfield, who had a great season last year, looks as if he might be on his way - to Shrewsbury, ironically. I think we'd have kept him if we had gone up, but he signed for us on a one year deal last summer to get back to fitness really. He's a League One standard player.

Luke Garbutt, who we had on loan last season, has returned to Everton, so we're in the market for a left back. Apparently Anthony Straker is the preferred choice. I don't know much about him, but he was apparently wanted by Championship clubs in January, so it would be a good signing on paper.

There's a few other players who are naturally being linked elsewhere and, likewise, we're having some linked with us, but nothing else really seems any more than speculation.

Ouch. Shame when a player does something like that, you'd think he'd want to stick around at least one more year, given how close they got to promotion this past season, but I suppose I can understand wanting to play at the highest level possible.

It seems that my old university town club Brighton are exclusively signing Valencia players. First Vicente, and now RB Bruno.

(Both are in my league leading FM2011 game, on season 2012/13. How things differ!)

    Don't mind if I do.

I also put a sneaky $10 on Chelsea getting odds of $9.50.

Perhaps. They were looking good for a long while for a playoffs spot but collapsed rather dramatically at the end.

Vicente is returning for next season. Unfortunately, in a situation that's much more like FM 2011, he has continued his impressive spell of injuries from Valencia. Only 17 league appearances last year, he'd walk (or rather hobble) in to the side usually.

Brief scare at B&H as Brighton exercise their option for Vicente's second year, despite promising they wouldn't. Took a few days after the start of pre-season training but he's back with the side. Wayne Bridge is in on a loan from Man City, and Kuszczak in for free from United.

Not sure I would. I think we'll be around the play-offs again, but there are a lot of teams who have made excellent signings for League 2 level. Fleetwood, Rotherham, Bristol Rovers, Northampton and Southend have all strengthened dramatically, with Chesterfield usually there or there abouts, having just been relegated from League 1.

There are better bets out there, in my opinion.

Lol I'll avoid that one then. They've dropped out to $17 so obviously people agree with you.

We've made two signings. Sam Deering from Barnet, who is a good player. Similar to Modric in style of play, in my opinion. He's tiny, though, so we'll need to keep the ball on the floor. Centre midfield, so I'm assuming he's Summerfield's replacement.

Also, we have signed Billy Jones, a left back, from Exeter. Another free transfer. He's supposed to have a nice left foot and a good dead ball delivery, but maybe a little suspect defensively. He'll replace Garbutt, who has returned to you, Tubby.

Yeah, I'm interested to see how Garbutt will go back with us because when he originally signed from Leeds I had really high expectations. His timing is unfortunate in that he is stuck behind Baines in the left back position because Baines rarely misses a game.

How did Garbutt go down at Cheltenham? Will he ever make the grade at Everton?

I think if Cheltenham get out to $20 I'll put a sneaky fiver on them.

Eh. He had a nice left foot on him, but you could tell that he was only a young lad. His positional sense was a little off and he looked a bit naive sometimes. Good footballer, though, and will certainly make it in the Championship once he has bulked up a bit.

Not sure he'll ever be a Premiership defender personally, but you don't get that many full backs.

Geez, they're not fooling around this year, perhaps a new favourite for promotion?

Bolton, meanwhile, have taken Kalifa Cisse on trial. Here's hoping he pans out, given he'd be in on a free.

Cisse is proven at that level. He'd be a good signing.

Whoo, football! Bolton got their preseason underway today with a 1-1 draw with Ayr. Not unexpected, given the experimenting that went on with the lineup. Most of the kids and new signings got a chance to play, though there wasn't a live feed (naturally) so no news from my end as to how they looked. There is a video floating around of Marcos Alonso's goal, so I'll try and hunt down a link for that. New kit looks great in action :)
