    I never said i hated Final Fantasy. I enjoyed 6, 8, & 9. Still say 7 was overhyped. I hated 10 and 13...

With all the hype surrounding the recent news, i felt it was pertinent, if trolly, that some people are looking forward to other games that don't have a media storm surrounding them.

I'd say the more hot take right now is saying you like Final Fantasy. I'm still going to follow it and hope that this demo was just bad.

I mean, I hated the FF12 demo and ended up really liking the game.

I too like XII, but I never got a chance to play the demo even though I bought (a used) Dragon Quest VIII

oh well, Dragon Quest VIII was pretty fun at least, one of the best games of its time actually

Legend of Dragoon remains one of my favorite RPG's. :p

In "relevant" news- i watched one of the trailers for FF[I lost count], and honestly the blonde reminds me too much of Cloud with his metrosexual hairstyle... makes me want to avoid this game moreso.

with Trails of Cold Steel 2 and Persona 5 coming, FF[Why both giving them numerals now?] is not even on my radar... because i don't own a Xbone or a PS4...

That was an awesome game. I remember the world map being massive for its time and I kept asking why FF got rid of their overworlds when DQ8 made an entire full size one.

See, my opinion the map was the only thing worth mentioning from XII. The gameplay and the characters were terrible. Vaan in particular was one of the worst protagonists I ever played. I still don't like the MMO feel that XII started. I miss ATB and random battles. To me, XII is still the worst game in the series. Only slightly below XIII, and the only reason XIII is higher is because I liked the characters more and the battle system was unique and more fun than XII. X is still my favorite and the last one I truly enjoyed in the series. It's obviously a hit or miss title in the franchise. You either love it, or hate it. I loved it.

I liked Balthier, Basch and Ashe. The main character should have been Ashe. Vaan and Penelo just felt in the way.

13 was the worst for me. Just a bad game with flat characters and flat world.

I liked 10 enough but that felt like the transition game into their decline. Pre-10 reminds me of how good they used to be...

I can completely understand your view on that. I thought the story and characters were head and shoulders better in XIII (minus Hope, he was awful; and I loved Sazh and his story arc). Originally XII's main character was supposed to be Balthier, but they abandoned that for Vaan.

Most people agree that XII and XIII are the worst two, and which is at the bottom varies. I've seen some rate X worst than both, but those are more outlier articles. Personally, I liked XIII more. Again because the Combat and characters were better. I've always been the odd duck in the rankings group: VI, X, VII, XI, VIII, XIII, XII

I did not play 1-5, so I don't rate them. And I don't replay VI (because I only have it on mobile and the controls suck) or XII. I have XIII, VII and VIII on Steam and occasionally replay them. I have X on my Vita and replay it yearly. I've considered getting 7 on my Vita, too, but that requires me buy a bigger memory card which I don't want to do. If I had to pre-render a guess, XV is going to slot in between VIII and XIII, though I am hoping it will beat VIII.

DQ8 was boring and monotonous. I actually fell asleep playing this game...

I do agree that Vaan and Penelo just seemed like tag along characters, once Ashe began dragging people around.
One thing I detested about FFXIII- is that S/E pretty much said that Valencia and effectively Vagrant Story were all part of the FF mythos. hellz no.

What do you guys think about XV? The more I see of it, the more I think it could actually be really good.

I thought this about XIII, too. And having played the Episode Duscae demos, the game is beautiful. There is no doubt about it. It just does not feel like Final Fantasy. Once again, the things that made a Final Fantasy game, a Final Fantasy game, are just not present. As a stand alone RPG, I think it has the potential to be a really good game. But if you're slapping a FF tag on it, it's just not that feel. It's still present time battle, no airships, no town-to-town movements, no large party (in fact you're stuck with the same four boy band members the whole game), no control of other characters...

Things you come to expect from FF are just not there. In fact, you only get to control Noctis, and he manifests swords for swordplay, and thats it. You don't even get to use magic, per se (generating the swords is magical, but you don't get to cast Firaga on a group of water flans). About the only FF things in this game are the gigantic titan-like summons and some classic recognizable beasties (like the Behemoth).

I'm going to give it a shot. And again, I think if this was a stand alone RPG with no FF in the title, it would have the potential to be great. But as a FF game, there are things that you come to expect. And they are just not there.

Balthier Basch as supposed to be the main character, but SE figured they could sell more accessories, toys, etc if their main character was a teen

That's interesting and I think would have been a whole lot better if they shifted it more on Balthier... I would play that again in a second.

Regarding FF XV - I just don't know. It looks bad to me. That could completely change depending on how the story/characters are handled. But as of now, I have no intention of buying it.

XIII was that way too. Vanille was supposed to be the main character, but they thought there would be more appeal if Lightning was the cover girl. I don't think it mattered much in XIII because the characters were all so interwoven. I think making Vaan the protagonist in XII instead of Balthier was a terrible missed opportunity.

Maybe the thing about XV that bothers me is that I just see a pack of guys that all look and act the same in the bits I've seen. They're all that typical SE male character that has no real interesting qualities outside of their stylish get ups and crazy weapons. Flash over substance once again until they prove me otherwise.

I messed up and went an edited, I meant to say Basch, it would have made a lot more sense and better

Balthier would have been awesome though

What's the point then, in having a party, if you only control one guy?

Your guess is as good as mine. If I had to venture a guess, SE, to appeal to younger, non-longtime fans, figured that you would connect most with one character. In most RPGs you take control of one person for the game, and grow and learn with that one person. FF was always large groups where you control one person in specific, but always controlled the actions, in battle, of the other party members. That was the case even in XIII when you could literally control every single character.

In XV, you're stuck on Noctis and that's it. If you go down in battle, you're at the mercy of hoping the AI can get to you and resurrect you. There is 4 male characters in your party, at all times, and that's it. You don't get temporary party members or people to switch in. You have Noctis whom you control and is a kind of, do it all depending on weapons (slow and heavy, light and quick). You have a guy with a huge sword (Gladiolus) that is the muscle, like Auron was in X. You have a science-y guy (Ignis) with magic abilities, but you never use them yourself. Then you have little zippy (Prompto) with guns running with wild abandon. While they all combine well, there is absolutely no control over what happens in the flow of battle. You control what Noctis does, but not anyone else. Say you're being pummeled and need to sword dash up and out of harms ways to recover health for a bit... well, you can't control Gladiolus and tank a mob for a bit while Noc heals. Instead, you literally hang there... watching the battle... doing nothing.

Now, can/will all/any of this change by the September release? Potentially. This is what I witnessed during my Episode Duscae demo runs. It's not a bad game. The environments are stunning. It just doesn't feel like FF. If this was called anything but FF, I would be selling it as a fun, stunningly beautiful RPG. But you slap FF on it, and suddenly the expectations (to me anyhow) are immensely different.

I understand the power of new fans and immediate gratification, etc... but longtime fans of the series are in our 30's now. We miss the old games' style and feel. If you can't get new fans doing what you do best, kill the series, because the new junk they've produced since X is embarrassing. The VII Remake was supposed to rekindle my trust in SE and FF... now it's looking more like it is going to be reskinned XV (when you don't even know if XV is any good).

If they went old school FF for one game, they would see that the games still appeal to the masses. You'll get new fans and get back a ton of old ones too. But they are stubborn, and they are drowning themselves as a result.

At least in Tales games, you can tell party members to use Items..

I believe there is a function similar where you can instruct them to use items. But nothing in terms of direct control. Indirect control is nice, but sorry, I want to be able to choose and control my party. If I want to be a tank, I want to control the tank. If I want to be the healer, i want to control the healer. If I want to deal out the damage, I want to control the DPSer. I want to do that seamlessly and I want to have more than the same 4 backstreet boys to do it with for 70+ hours.

In other news, IX is now available for Steam in glorious HD. I'm not sure about the new interface, but I probably can't refrain from buying it at some point when it's on sale. Judging from the trailer, though, it looks pretty good. So colourful.

The character models and cinematics look great. I just played the original on my PS1 a couple months ago and the difference is huge. I wonder if modders will try to get in and HD-ify the backgrounds somehow.

Makes me wish I could afford a wireless HDMI cable... then I could stream it to my TV... I don't like playing Steam because my PC and montor are in uncomfortable positions.

I'm excited for it. Between that, KH3, and the Persona 5 release I'll have my hands full in 2017.

On the PS2 I pretty much did everything. Probably would have gotten a platinum if that existed. Wondering if I should go for it again.

They're going to take out the stupid stuff with the treasure, right? Opening this one random treasure means you don't get the Zodiac Spear.

    >Remakes all previous games.
    >FF15 takes a decade to come out.

This is what I hate about SE. I understand that games take longer to make now than before but look at this release schedule before when they were Squaresoft

    FF7: 1997
    FF8: 1999
    FF9: 2000
    FF10: 2001

We've only had 3 traditional numbered entries in 15 years now since SE took over.
