Our women's team won the World Cup, beating Japan 5-2, and this came after they shutout the #1 ranked team from Germany.

All those America haters are going to have to find a new argument as to why we suck as a country. I've seen much mockery at the expense of our country because "America isn't good at the most popular sport in the world".

Turns out, we're pretty damn great.

the female soccer players are great, and probably better than the men's team. They should be the ones paid millions, not the men.

I'll have to mock your educational system instead. You do realise that you've always had one of the best female soccer teams, winning 3 of the 7 World Cups, coming second 3 times and third on the other occasion? This was a great win but the fact that you have a great women's team is not exactly surprising news.

Oh, apologies, I was so overwhelmed by the number of successes that I dun goofed. They've actually come third 3 times and second once.

Yeah. They have always been pretty great at women's soccer. Still, congratulations!

Does no one else in America remember Brittney Chastain? Or however her name is spelled. I don't watch or particularly like soccer, but even I remember her infamous stripdown slide that's STILL talked about in the same way Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton are... At least they had looks going for them... Somewhat... Ok nevermind...

I remember we had a BBQ going on and most of us were in the house watching that match. Briana Scurry was my favorite from that team - Still remember watching the penalty kicks at the end so vividly.

    I can agree with this.

I don't follow soccer, so I had no idea.

    There's always one...

    this is the worst thread
"so I can boast about the accomplishments of a team I casually, vaguely follow once every four years as a poor attempt to show foreigners that America isn't as bad as people thought because the accomplishments of a team in a sport that only, literally, this one country cares about somehow makes up for everything else people dislike about Americans, including being absudly proud and boastful over the stupidest things!"

    this is the worst thread

Well then Mr. Moderater of the Super Variety, close it. Us Americans won't care. It's about soccer, after all.

I like soccer. Currently watching the Gold Cup. Dempsey has two goals, but the US is only up 2-1 against Honduras right now and have had some issues this game.

That being said, the US will likely end up in the final against Mexico, as per usual.

Also the women's match set a viewership record in the US. More viewers than any of the NBA finals games.

Oh definitely. Great to see that. I think the average viewership throughout the match was somewhere in the mid 20 millions and the peak was over 30 million.

I hope this carries over into more people watching the gold cup. This is one of the few sports where the men's and women's games are played the same, so it's not a slightly different set of rules (not that there are many) to learn.

Having it go right from the world cup to the gold cup could be perfectly timed. Though it's unfortunate that the gold cup was on FS1 last night. I had to go out of my way to find it because I had no idea what channel that actually was in the guide (hint: nowhere near the rest of the sports channels).

That completely depends on your definition of novelty.
